The New Digital SAT - Everything you need to know about it
The new digital SAT, set to be fully implemented in the U.S. by spring 2024 and already in use internationally since spring 2023, represents a significant shift from the traditional paper-and-pencil format to a digital-only format. Here are some key aspects you need to know about the digital SAT:

-
Format Changes: The digital SAT will be shorter, approximately 2 hours compared to the traditional 3 hours. It features adaptive testing, where the difficulty of the second part of each section depends on your performance in the first part (College Board Blog
-
Scoring and Content: The scoring will remain on the 1600-point scale. The content tested will still cover the essential areas necessary for college readiness, but the delivery will be through a digital platform. The Reading and Writing sections will focus on skills like comprehension and rhetorical analysis, while the Math section will allow calculator use throughout and include multiple-choice as well as open-ended questions (College Board Blog)
-
Test Administration and Security: Tests will be administered at testing centers or in schools under proctored conditions, ensuring that the SAT remains secure. The digital format allows for each student to receive a unique test form, increasing security against cheating (College Board Newsroom).
-
Technology and Accessibility: Students can use either personal or school-issued devices. If there are issues like a power outage or loss of connectivity, the testing platform is designed to save your progress so you can continue once reconnected. For those without personal devices, the College Board will provide devices on the test day (College Board Newsroom).
-
Preparation and Practice: Free practice resources will continue to be available, and the test structure is designed to make the SAT experience less stressful and more straightforward. The test will also feature shorter reading passages and a built-in calculator (College Board Blog) (College Board Newsroom).
-
Implications for College Admissions: Despite the format change, the SAT continues to play a crucial role in college admissions. Many colleges still value SAT scores, even those that are test-optional, as they provide additional context to a student's academic abilities.
